Top international teaching countries: Part 2

In part 1 we explored 4 of the top international teaching destinations in Asia and the Middle-east. We go deeper into the east in part 2 of this blog and look at some more exotic destinations for qualified teachers to thrive in.

Thailand

Known as one of the most popular TEFL destinations, and holiday getaways for recently graduated students; Thailand also has a variety of jobs for experienced qualified teachers.

There are two kinds of hiring situations when applying for a teaching job – ‘local hires’ and ‘overseas hires’. As an experienced qualified teacher, you want to secure a ‘overseas hire’ as your salary will be significantly higher.

Overseas hires usually occur at international or private schools. These schools are looking for highly-qualified teachers, thus the salary is higher and the packages are great.

The international or private schools are based on British, American, and Australian standards.

Salaries for qualified teachers range between $5000 and $6000, varying based on the level of instruction. For example, acquiring a headmaster or high-level admin position will see you earning much more.

Given that the cost of living in Thailand compared to that of commonwealth countries is incredibly low, qualified teachers can expect a relatively comfortable standard of living.

Furthermore, besides the great salary available for qualified international teachers, Thailand is about the experience, the weather, the food, the atmosphere and the exotic lifestyle.

Vietnam

There is a collective love for Vietnam among international teachers merely based on its beauty, sandy beaches and rich culture.

It is a fast-growing country where the cost of living remains relatively low. This provides the perfect educational environment for both experienced and newly qualified teachers to thrive in.

Again, your ideal teaching environment will be an international school, as many will require you to be a qualified teacher.

You can expect an average salary remuneration between $2200 and $4000 per month. Vietnam like many other Asian countries has an incredibly low cost of living. A 2-bedroom apartment is but a mere $500, water is around $3 per month, and electricity is $30-$50 a month. Food and beverage prices can range from 0.50c to $10 depending on the restaurant.

There are many international school developments in the pipeline, making the market more lucrative for international teachers.

If saving while you work is your goal, Vietnam is the place to teach.

Singapore

Known as one of the most tropical island destinations in the world, Singapore’s economy has risen rapidly over the past few years.

Education is primarily instructed in English, where salaries vary based on the level of instruction as well as experience.

Expats make up a very large part of the urban population. Most teaching positions require a bachelor’s degree, where roles in private schools highly recommend training and experience in a subject area.

Minimum teaching benefits include relocation allowance and airfare. International school benefits include accommodation, health care, and provision for family members.

Compared to other Asian countries, Singapore is considered one of the most expensive cities in which to live. Teaching salaries do however make provision for this, where qualified teachers can earn between $3000 and $6000 a month.

Given that a large part of the population are expats, there is always a familiar face to find. Singapore consists of 63 of the world’s most beautiful islands so there are plenty of adventures to go on in your downtime.

Taiwan

From ancient temples and modern metropolitan cities, to exotic cuisine and beautiful coastal beaches; Taiwan is a highly sought after teaching destination that comes with a rich culture and lifestyle.

Depending on whether you apply for a public or private school teaching job, you can earn between $1400 and $2400. It is common practice to offer bonuses upon contract completion regardless of school type. Benefits across the board include reimbursed airfare, medical insurance, and accommodation assistance. Some schools provide accommodation allowance and overtime allows you to save.

Teaching in Taiwan commonly requires at least 1-2 years’ teaching. Furthermore, private school jobs provide a large amount of vacation time – up to 20 days off per school year, so you have plenty time to explore this beautiful country.

Although Taiwan is a densely populated city, it has a well-balanced mix of natural and urban beauty.

If this doesn’t get you excited to teach abroad for whatever reason it may be, we don’t know what will.
